Faith & Image visits & talk

Art Trail 2Mark Lewis on behalf of Faith and Image is conducting a guided visit to see contemporary artworks in three churches on the Barking Art Trail on Saturday 30 May.

Morning: St Barnabas, Walthamstow and St Edmund’s, Chingford. Afternoon: tba. Meet 10.00am at St Mary’s Church, High Road, South Woodford, London E18 2PA. Refreshments will be available en route, and we will stop for a pub lunch. Lifts to venues will be provided. The day will conclude by around 4.00pm.

There will also be an evening event at 7.30pm starting with a buffet supper in the Gwinnell Room, St Mary’s Church, followed by a presentation, ‘An Art Sabbatical in Britain and Europe’ by Jonathan Evens.

Over three months in 2014 Jonathan enjoyed the opportunity to visit churches in Belgium, England, France and Switzerland to see works of modern and contemporary art by a wide range of significant twentieth century and contemporary artists. The commissions he saw tell a story of a continuing engagement by the Church with contemporary art, from the Post-Impressionists to the present day.

Yet this story, sometimes contentious, sometimes contested, has not been well told either by the Church or the mainstream art world. ‘There are many reasons for this on both sides,’ says Jonathan, ‘but my concern in making this story the focus of my sabbatical was to encourage the Church to tell and to value this story.’

Cost to cover refreshments (not including lunch!) during day trip: £4.00. Evening talk and buffet: £5.00.
Book now: Booking is essential for the trail and the evening event. Please contact Mark Lewis by Tuesday 26 May – 020 8504 5840.
